Local artists Babeworld make pop-culture inspired films and installations that explore identity, disability, access and neurodivergence. Through a tongue-in-cheek approach, they playfully engage with serious themes while drawing on the collective’s lived experiences.
For Lost Grace Discovered at Bermondsey Square, Babeworld evokes the nostalgic environment of a 1990s picture house to explore the parallels between cinematic and online spaces as sites of refuge and projection. The artists consider how experiences of loneliness, escapism and emotional withdrawal become entangled with neurodivergence and chronic illness, reflecting on the ways certain public spaces can enable forms of private retreat and collective intimacy.
At the heart of the exhibition is imagery taken from Babeworld’s newly released film When The Sky Gets Bright, which follows a neurodivergent young person living with chronic illness and social isolation. Exploring what the artists describe as “the line between being chronically online and chronically ill”, the film considers how digital space is a complex site of survival, intimacy and alienation for the protagonist.
Through the mise-en-scène of Lost Grace Discovered Babeworld present a fragmented portrait of the protagonist’s inner world across the gallery space. By employing the language of the cinema – film posters, heavy curtains, retro carpets and popcorn boxes – Babeworld positions their moving image practice within a wider filmic canon, drawing on the magical realism, projection and emotional intensity associated with the medium. It further explores how the visual language of film allows interior experiences of isolation and longing to be projected into shared public space.
Lost Grace Discovered was developed during Babeworld’s residency at FormaHQ and has been generously supported by Unlimited, the arts commissioning body supporting disabled artists.
Babeworld’s intervention is Forma’s fifth show at Bermondsey Square since they began programming the space. Previous presentations include: Athen Kardashian & Nina Mhach Durban, Gaia Di Lorenzo & Francesca Pionati, Hannan Jones & Shamica Ruddock, and Amaal Said.
