The Arzner’s Cinema in the Square: A Bank Holiday Hit!

Over the August bank holiday weekend, Bermondsey Square was transformed into a vibrant open-air cinema, bringing together film lovers, families, and curious passers-by for a truly memorable experience.

From the moment the first screening began, it was clear that Cinema in the Square had struck a chord with the community. With the highest-selling screening reaching 120 tickets and plenty more stopping by to soak up the atmosphere, the square buzzed with excitement and connection.

A Seamless Experience

Thanks to careful planning and a brilliant team, the event ran smoothly from start to finish. 140 chairs were used across the weekend, and the silent headphones worked perfectly, ensuring everyone could enjoy the films without disturbing the surrounding area. Evening security and barriers added an extra layer of comfort, with attendees sharing how safe and relaxed they felt throughout.

Even our neighbours were supportive, with no complaints – just one resident who mentioned their balcony plants blocked the subtitles!

Each night, the square was returned to normal by 22:45, keeping everything tidy and respectful of the space.

Community Spirit and Future Plans

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the weekend was the number of people who stopped to ask about the event, the cinema, and Bermondsey Square itself. Many were disappointed to hear it was just a one-off for the bank holiday weekend, which tells us one thing: Cinema in the Square deserves a comeback!

We’re already exploring ways to bring it back next summer – perhaps over multiple weekends – to give even more people the chance to enjoy outdoor cinema in the heart of the community.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported, attended, and helped make Cinema in the Square such a success. We’re looking forward to planning for an even bigger and better version next year.

Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, check out some of our favourite moments from the weekend below!
