why the rush, do you know when your work is done: an exhibition of work by Willem Hussem

If you are looking for a unique and inspiring art experience in London, you might want to check out the exhibition of Willem Hussem at VITRINE gallery. Willem Hussem (1900-1974) was a Dutch painter and poet who created abstract works that combine geometric shapes, vibrant colours and poetic texts. He was influenced by Zen Buddhism, constructivism and the CoBrA movement, and developed his distinctive style that reflects his quest for simplicity, harmony and balance.

The exhibition runs from 29 February 2024 to 19 May 2025 at VITRINE Bermondsey in London.

The exhibition, organised in collaboration with Dürst Britt & Mayhew gallery from The Hague, features paintings from the 1960s and 70s, as well as a selection of Hussem’s short poems. The paintings are mostly small in size, but they have a powerful visual impact. They are composed of dynamic lines, curves and planes that create a sense of movement and rhythm. The bright and contrasting colours, sometimes complemented by black or white accents. The poems are written in Dutch, but they are translated into English on the wall labels. They are concise and expressive, often using metaphors or paradoxes to convey Hussem’s philosophy and emotions.

The exhibition is a rare opportunity to see Hussem’s work in London, as he is mostly known and appreciated in the Netherlands. It is also a chance to discover a remarkable artist who uniquely combined painting and poetry, creating aesthetic and meaningful works. The exhibition runs until May 19th 2024 at VITRINE gallery in Bermondsey Square. Don’t miss it!
